Don’t Book a Snowy Winter Elopement Until You Read This

Winter wonderland elopements are magical! I wish more people wanted to do them actually, but there are some added obstacles you should consider BEFORE booking anything as the snowy plan is not for everyone.

1. Road Closures & Seasonal Access

Many mountain roads, park entrances, and scenic overlooks close seasonally due to snow.

  • Some locations are completely inaccessible in winter

  • Others require snow tires, chains, or 4WD

  • Closures can change daily depending on storms

Always check local DOT websites and park service updates—and have a backup plan.

2. Weather Is Unpredictable

Snow forecasts can shift quickly. Clear skies one day can turn into a blizzard the next.

  • Whiteout conditions are possible

  • Wind chill can make temps feel much colder

  • Storms may delay travel or cancel access

Flexibility is key when planning a winter elopement. What happens if the day you need to get to the mountains the pass closes? Dont wait till that day to come up with a plan.

This was a July elopement on Mount Baker, this family drove from Ohio to elope in the flowering meadows yet ended up in a late snow covering!

3. Shorter Daylight Hours

Winter days are much shorter, especially in mountain locations.

  • Sunset can be as early as 4:oo PM on the sea, but in the mountains you may be in the shadows in the early to mid afternoon!

  • Your ceremony time impacts photography, warmth, and travel

  • Rushing against daylight can add stress OR be part of the thrilling adventure for the right couple.

A slower, simpler timeline or earlier start often works best.

4. Cold Temperatures & Layering

Cold affects more than just comfort.

  • Fingers can go numb quickly

  • Battery life drains faster (phones, cameras. This really shouldn't be an issue but make sure you have your chargers at the ready)

  • Heavy layers can limit movement

  • What is the plan for young children if you have any attending your wedding? Even if you don't mind the cold, they might mind it!

Plan outfits that allow warmth and mobility, and build in warm-up breaks. Just having leggings under your dress can make all the difference! I personally am not bothered by these things, but if you are sensitive to the cold, if it impacts your enjoyment, if it makes it hard to wear your outfits, maybe this isn't for you.

5. Footwear Matters (A Lot)

Snowy terrain isn’t forgiving.

  • Ice, packed snow, and slush are common

  • Fashion shoes aren’t practical for walking

  • Slipping is a real risk

Snow boots, traction devices, and changing shoes are your best friends. If a portion of your elopement is indoors that's the time for cute heels :)

6. Travel Time & Transportation

Winter travel takes longer than expected.

  • Snow slows driving significantly

  • Parking may be limited or inaccessible

  • Some locations require snowmobiles, skis, or snowshoes

Factor in buffer time so your day doesn’t feel rushed. A LOT of time.

7. Backup Locations Are Essential

Winter plans need flexibility.

  • Have a secondary ceremony spot nearby

  • Consider lower-elevation alternatives

  • Be open to pivoting if conditions change

  • Before booking your lodging, see what their refund policy is if road conditions prevent you from using their space.

  • Make sure ALL of your vendors know what the back up plan is when you book them. They need to know where they're going before they can commit to the plans.

A solid backup plan removes so much stress.

8. Permits & Seasonal Restrictions

Some permits change in winter.

  • Certain parks limit access or ceremonies

  • Rangers may not be available

  • Permit offices may have reduced hours

Confirm winter-specific rules before booking anything. I can help you with this!

9. Guest Considerations (If You’re Including Them)

Snowy elopements can be tough for guests.

  • Older family members may struggle with terrain

  • Travel delays are more likely

  • Cold exposure may limit how long people can stay

Keep guest comfort and safety front of mind.

10. Vendor Experience in Winter Conditions

Not all vendors are comfortable working in snow.

  • Ask about winter experience

  • Confirm backup plans

  • Make sure your photographer knows how to plan around weather and light

An experienced winter vendor team makes all the difference.

11. Safety First—Always

Snowy landscapes are beautiful, but they can be dangerous.

  • Avalanche zones may be nearby

  • Cell service can be limited

  • Hypothermia is a real risk

Choose locations wisely and never push conditions for photos.

12. Embracing Flexibility

Snowy elopements require a mindset shift.

  • Things may not go exactly as planned

  • Conditions may change last minute

  • Letting go of control leads to a better experience

The couples who love their snowy elopement most are the ones who lean into the unexpected.

That was a lot of scary things to consider. How about some of the amazing experiences that can come from a snowy elopement!?

  • Quiet, peaceful landscapes with way fewer people around

  • Fresh snow makes everything feel soft, intimate, and cinematic

  • Winter sports equipment - get out your snow shoes, your skis, snowboard, think of how cute you'll be!

  • Cozy moments close together (natural hand-holding all day)

  • Steam-in-the-air kisses = unreal photos

  • Blankets, hot drinks, and shared warmth built into the day

  • Snowflakes falling during your vows (pure magic if it happens)

  • Bold outfits that pop beautifully against white scenery

  • That just-us-against-the-world feeling

  • Fewer distractions, more presence

  • Winter sunsets and moody light are incredibly romantic

  • Celebrating with hot cocoa, champagne, or whiskey hits different

  • Feels intentional, adventurous, and deeply personal

  • If you want/need to elope in the winter, the snow is usually the prettiest scenery you can get that time of year!

  • You’ll never forget how it felt — snowy elopements imprint on you

Planning a winter elopement takes experience, flexibility, and a solid plan. If you’re looking for a photographer who also helps you think through the details, I’d love to be part of your day :)
